“Pencil Beamforming Increases Human Exposure to ElectroMagnetic Fields”: True or False?

According to a very popular belief - widespread among non-scientific communities the exploitation of narrow beams, a.k.a. “pencil beamforming”, results in prompt increase exposure levels radiated by 5G Base Stations (BSs). To face such concern with scientific approach, this work we propose novel localization-enhanced pencil beamforming technique, which traffic beams are tuned accordance uncertainty localization User Equipment (UE). Compared currently deployed techniques, generally employ fixed width, exploit functionality made available architecture synthesize direction and width each beam towards served UE. We then evaluate effectiveness terms ElectroMagnetic Field (EMF) UE throughput over different realistic case-studies. Results, obtained from publicly released open-source simulator, dispel myth: adoption triggers reduction w.r.t. other alternative include e.g., cellular coverage not exploiting beamforming. The EMF is achieved only for that but also whole territory (including locations proximity BS). In addition, large adequate most services can be guaranteed when individually one dedicated beam.
